The Modulation of Daily Southern Africa Precipitation by El Niño–Southern Oscillation across the Summertime Wet Season

چکیده
Abstract The spatiotemporal evolution of daily southern Africa precipitation characteristics, and associated atmospheric circulation, related to El Niño La Niña is examined across the region’s November–April wet season. Precipitation characteristics are in terms monthly changes average precipitation, number days, heavy days three independently constructed estimates observed during 1983–2018. Mechanisms changes, including contributions from mass divergence, water vapor transports, transient eddies, diagnosed using moisture budget based on ERA5 reanalysis. anomalies that build December–March, core rainy season, culminating significantly below values stretching a semiarid region central Mozambique southeastern Angola. A broad anticyclone centered over Botswana drives these primarily through anomalous with advection eddies playing secondary roles. above all south 20°S February much less so other five months. driven divergence due strong cyclonic whereas similar circulation more diffuse evolutions not equal opposite. robustness an asymmetric evolution, which could have implications for subseasonal forecasts, needs be confirmed analysis additional empirical data established climate model experimentation.

El Nino/Southern Oscillation
Three previously published proxy records of El Nino/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) variability were compared: a documentary record from coastal South America; an ice-core record from the Quelccaya ice cap in Peru; and a tree-ring record record from arid site conifers in the southwestern United States. The records were calibrated with long ENSO instrument records, and all the proxy records showed s...
متن کاملEl Niño - Southern Oscillation
El Niño (The Christ Child) is named for the unusual warm current of water flowing south near the coast of Peru whose onset is often felt near Christmas. This mostly regular event has a great effect on the Peruvian anchovy industry, at one time, one of the most productive fisheries in the world. When cold-water upwelling stops reducing the amount of nutrients in the surface waters off the South ...

During 1877 and 1878 much of China was struck by famine, due to a severe drought. More than nine million people perished. In India, at the same time, more than eight million deaths were attributed to famine also caused by a drought. In many districts, a quarter of the population died. Drought in the same period also caused crop failures, scarcity of food or even famine, in north-eastern Brazil,...

Combined effects of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and El Niño-Southern Oscillation on Global Land Dry–Wet Changes
The effects of natural variability, especially El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) effects, have been the focus of several recent studies on the change of drought patterns with climate change. The interannual relationship between ENSO and the global climate is not stationary and can be modulated by the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). However, the global land distribution of the dry-wet chang...
